What is Therapy?
(A Mindfulness Based Approach to Counseling, Psychotherapy, and Healing)
Let’s break it down. At its most basic level, any form of therapy involves either a healing service or the curative treatment of an ailment or disease. Psychotherapy more specifically looks at treating conditions of the psyche. “Psyche” is frequently taken to mean the mental realms. Psychotherapy is then understood to be a therapy of the mind, or a healing approach to addressing difficulties in the mind.
While this is certainly a component of psychotherapy, it falls short of the mark. When we look deeply at the psyche, we discover it is much more than simply one’s mental functions. The word “psyche” at its root means “animating spirit”, or more fully, “the invisible animating principle which occupies and directs the physical body”. From this perspective, we come to understand that a therapy of the psyche addresses much more than conditions of the mind. Certainly, greater ease in mental functioning is important on its own; however, the true aim of psychotherapy is to treat the aliveness of the individual.
What does that even mean?
Can you remember a time in your life where you were absolutely sure you were alive? How did you know? What was the setting? Where were you? Inside? Outside? How old were you? Who were you with? Were you alone? Can you remember the sensations? The feelings?
That sense of feeling powerfully aware of your embodied (somatic) human experience- THAT is aliveness.
The goal of therapy is to help you discover, nurture, and unfold that aliveness in yourself and in your life. By becoming mindful of your moment-to-moment experience in the therapy room, you may uncover and unwind deeply held blocks. Together we build a container of safety, trust, and authenticity. In this space free from shame or judgement you have the opportunity to explore the deep wisdom of your own heart-mind. Through our collaboration you may discover an awareness of what brings you joy, what creates a greater sense of freedom and choice, what gives your life meaning and purpose.
